Changing your “I Have To” to “I Want To”

Jane bald 1I bet that there are times during your day that you say, “I have to do this” or “I have to do that” and you feel overwhelmed or just plain tired.  You say to yourself, “I don’t have time,” or I’m too tired, ” or “I don’t feel like it.”

Whether it is exercise, fixing a healthy meal, doing housework, or completing an assignment.  You just plain can’t get motivated.

What if you could turn that around to something slightly more positive, something that might change your mind ever so slightly?  Something that would get you moving….

I have studied The Work of Byron Katie and The Model from Brooke Castillo and there is a way.  And it does work.

Let’s take exercise.  The last thing you want to do is get your sneakers on in the morning.  You say I should or I have to get my 10,000 steps in (I can have said this myself just last night.)  When you say “I have to”, how do you feel?  Frustrated. Tired. “Put upon.”

So, what do you do?  Kick yourself.  Lash out at your family? Dig your heels in?

Then what is the result?  You don’t go for your walk?  Or you go with a resentful heart, kicking and screaming,……

What if there could be a better way?  What if you could turn this around, so you felt good about going for that walk?

The first step is to create a thought that you believe, that is more neutral or positive about this situation.  Or imagine the feeling you would like instead.  Excited, enthusiastic, or at least more positive.

You could make the statement, “I want to lose the weight” or “I can do this!”  Or you want the feeling of accomplishment or enthusiasm.

Then what you do might be slap that FitBit on and head out the door.  Or set up an appointment with a personal trainer.

The result?  You achieve your goal of weight loss, agility, or decrease in joint pain.

You also create new neural pathways for the new thought.  And the old thought will decrease.  Put your new thought out there.  On paper, repeat, share.

This is a tool you can use for any situation in which you may feel stuck or blocked.  Weight loss, career, or in relationships.

Try it.  It works!!
