All You Need Is Love: Applying the Fruits of the Spirit

All you need is love.  Brings back great memories of the Beatles and singing along to that great tune.  But the truth is – the greatest commandment that God gave us is all about Love:

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.  Luke 10:27

Most of us think we do a pretty good job loving God (worshiping regularly, praying) and loving our neighbor (giving to charity, helping a friend.)

It’s the loving your neighbor, as Yourself, I think that we aren’t so good at.  We often forget about that part.  We may be so busy taking are of or worrying about others that we forget about loving ourselves.

Do you often criticize the way your body looks?  Do you fail to move your body, even though their are many benefits, especially making you feel better?  Do you eat foods that you know may not be the most loving for your body?

Do you do things that nourish your mind – ways of loving that brain of yours, instead of filling it with negative news and mindless social media surfing?

It’s time to make a change.  It’s clear that God wants us to love and care for ourselves, body mind and spirit.

So where can you start?  Here are a few suggestions:

  1.  Stop talking badly about your body.  Pick a part of your body that you like and compliment yourself on it.  Often.  God created you in His image and when you criticize your body, you are talking bad about Him and His creation.
  2. Set aside some time for you to nourish your mind and spirit – read a good book and the Bible.  Start there.  God gave you a magnificent brain.  Learn something new.  Make some new neural pathways.  You are never too old for that.
  3. You don’t need to schedule a manicure or a pedicure, but those are great ways of loving on yourself.  Buy some new bath soap or shower gel and treat yourself to a special experience.  It’s an inexpensive way to love on your body.
  4. Find little snippets of time to bring joy in your life.  If journaling is fun for you, take 15 minutes to sit down, maybe in nature or in front of a fire, and journal a bit.  Or enjoy a cup of tea.  Play with your dog or cat.  Call your grandkids.  Talk a walk.  What brings you joy?  Do it.
  5. Put yourself and your health first.  Then you can love on your family and yourself at the same time.  Let go of a food habit that may be causing you to gain weight, move into prediabetes or diabetes, and keeps you unhappy with yourself.  Find a healthy protocol or plan that works for you, stop snacking and let go of some of the sugary foods that are causing your blood sugar and mood to fluctuate.  Start with one thing.  Take a baby step.  You will be amazed at how you can build up your trust in yourself when you honor your commitment to yourself. It only takes one step to start loving yourself and your body.

Well, that’s it.  Those are some ways you can start loving yourself more every day.  Jesus is walking with you and he will smile when He sees you take steps to love yourself like He loves you.  Will you start today?
