These past few weeks and months have made my heart and mind tired and sad. From worry over contracting an illness, injustices, politics, and family, my whole being is tired.
How about you? Are you having some of the same worries and stresses?
And how have you been dealing with it? Some us snack and overeat.
Some of us overdrink.
Some of us veg out on social media, online shopping, or mindlessly binge watching shows on TV.
None of which really help the state of our hearts and minds.
But I know something that helped me and will help you, too.
Taking a Sacred Rest.
I am taking this term from a wonderful book of the same name Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity by Saundra Dalton-Smith, M.D.
The suggestions in this book can apply very well to our current situation
The Rest can be physical, emotional, and spiritual. Are you literally “on the go” all the time? Work, home, exercise, church and volunteer activities (under normal circumstances) – if yes, it’s time to make some changes. Right now, it may be too much information, zoom meetings, logistics, trying to keep yourself and your family safe and healthy.
How about in the amount of media you allow in your brain every day? If you are constantly bombarded by social media, news, radio, podcasts – it’s time to take some time off.
Are you absorbing the emotional experiences of other people, even from your family members? Too much togetherness can breed overwhelm and short tempers.
Is your spiritual life active or non-existent? Do you allow time in your day for prayer, journaling, reading scripture or just being with God? If not, make time. The time of spiritual connection can soothe our spirit in the best possible way.
Here are 4 ways you can give your heart, body, mind and spirit a Sacred Rest.
- Take time to literally just stop for a period of time each day. Take time to sit and relax over a cup of coffee and tea. Read a book. Take a nap. Breathe. You have permission. Whatever relaxes you. Schedule this time!
- Take a social media and other screen time break. Instead of watching the news every morning, skip it. Instead of staying on social media all day, read a book, go for a walk, or engage in an activity you used to love to do.
- Take a time out from engaging with people who drag down your energy and spirits. It may involve some self-discipline, but it will give your brain and emotional state a well-deserved rest.
- Make time for God! Read scripture, journal with Him, listen to inspiring music or talk with God and listen for Him in how He communicates with you.
Your entire being will say, “thank you.”
Here is what Jesus said about taking a rest:
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matt.11:28-30
