That’s an interesting question, can God help you lose weight. What would your answer be?
At first glance, you would think, of course, God can help us with any problem or struggle. Scripture tells us this, such as in Joshua 1:9,
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
But, when we get to the point where we know for our own health and well-being, we need and want to lose weight, do we turn to Him for help?
From my own experience, God was not who I first turned to for help. I had become prediabetic and had gained 15 pounds. I turned to life coaches who have excellent programs and I did lose weight. I use their principles in my own weight loss coaching.
But there was something major missing. I was relying on my own strength to change the way I ate. From six small meals a day to 3 meals, no snacks, and no sugar or flour. This was no small feat, but I knew for my own health and the way I wanted to feel, that things had to change. There were times when I was really battling my will and my desire for foods that I knew were not good for me.
Where could I turn to fight the battle going on inside me? The thought occurred to me, where do I generally turn for help and encouragement? Scripture, of course. What a no-brainer. God had helped me heal from so many things in my life: times of struggle, fear, sadness, anger, stress. Why not turn to Him now in the midst of this new struggle?
I began to look for scripture that would give me the strength I needed to make healthy choices, instead of the choices that would just make me feel good or would conform to the ways others around me were eating.
I began with Psalm 139:14
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
He made me and knit me together, and wasn’t it my responsibility to take care of the body He gave me, to the best of my ability? And that included not raising my blood sugar with food that did my body harm.
So I changed the foods that I was eating. I had a choice and I took the one that I knew would be best for me and that would delight Him. Wouldn’t you like to delight Him, too, and enjoy the body He so lovingly made for you?
You have a choice, too, and He can be right there with you every step of the way. Here is one of my favorite scriptures that can help you make the right choice from Isaiah 30:19b, 20-21:
He will be gracious to you when you cry out,
The Lord will give you the bread you need and the water for which you thirst.
No longer will your Teacher hide himself,
but with your own eyes you shall see your Teacher,
While from behind, a voice shall sound in your ears:
“This is the way, walk in it,”
when you would turn to the right or to the left.
Make your choice. You can do it with God’s help!
