When Vegan Isn’t Gluten Free
It is often scary and a challenge to eat out when you have multiple food allergies like me, to gluten, soy, dairy, egg, shellfish and a handful of others. Such was the case the other night when we went to an upscale Indian restaurant called The Clay Pit in Austin, TX. Usually I can find something to eat in an Indian restaurant, since they have so many vegan choices.
On the menu, it was clearly noted a V meant Vegan and if the item had gluten, it would have a G next to it. Feeling relatively safe, I ordered a lentil soup and also asked the waiter to make sure it had no dairy or gluten. He was right and it was delicious. Then I got a hankerin’ for some kind of GF bread (missing the bread I have at home) and remembered that sometimes there is a type of bread they have in Indian restaurants made from chickpea flour.
