Here’s the deal, ladies and gentlemen. There are some items in a man’s wardrobe that are just BIG No-Nos. Guys, if you want to capture a lady’s eye, for heaven’s sake, take note of these and do something about them. You will thank me.
You will get compliments. I promise. Your date, girlfriend or wife will take notice. Ladies, you can help him out…
Let’s get started:
- Get rid of your double-pleated pants. I’m sorry (not really), I know you love them, but they look like you have a pouch in front and not in a good way. My husband says that they will come back in style. I don’t really care. Now your guy may have some suits with pleated pants-it might be too expensive to get rid of a suit, but keeping his coat on helps camouflage the baggy pleats. A guy look slimmer in a flat-front pants. Period. See picture.
- The light wash relaxed fit (read:baggy) jeans have got to go. The exception is if you want to wear them doing yard work. That I will accept. A nice pair of dark wash or black jeans can be worn practically anywhere (casual Friday at work, date night, out with friends, etc.) This is what a client of mine said, “I get more compliments on the dark blue jeans you told me to buy and the chinos without the pleats.” What more can I say?
- On the subject of suits, if you wear one, make sure that it fits! If it’s too big (shoulders, pant length, sleeves) you will look dwarfed, like it was someone else’s hand-me-down. If it is too small, well, it will just accentuate the parts of your body you may want to play down. I know the newer trendy men’s suits have a shorter pants length and coat length. It you are tempted to buy one, make sure you get a second and third opinion from a stylist or neutral third party. They are tricky! You could end up looking like you mistakenly put the suit in the dryer. Not cool! Classy always tops trendy.
- No scuffed shoes, please! There is no excuse for your loafers or dress shoes to be scuffed. I repeat, no excuse. People notice – you could have the nicest suit or casual outfit on and negate the whole thing with scuffed shoes. It just looks to me like you just don’t care. It can totally ruin a look. Polish them yourself (it’s not difficult) or take them to a shoe repair shop. No excuses.
- And last, but not least, no t-shirt/undershirts with deodorant stains. I know in most cases people will not see them. But to put it bluntly, they are just gross. Your lady will tell you the same. To me, it’s just a sign that you don’t care. See above re: scuffy shoes. You can get a six-pack from www.jockey.com for $49. Well worth it. You can go to Wal-Mart and get Hanes. Bottom line: they are inexpensive. Deodorant can cause a stain. Go buy some new ones. Your lady will thank you. And you will look and feel fresher and cleaner. Always good.
These last 2 are pet peeves of mine. No excuses!!

And totally agree about that tee shirt thing….
I think the t-shirt thing is very common. Just nobody talks about it?.
Duly note. 🙂
