What Really Matters in the Big Scheme

grandparenting2Have you ever had one of those moments when you have choice between going with your heart and acting with your head?

Today I had one of those moments.  Sitting down to work at home after having left a work-related meeting and a small shopping stop, I got a call from my daughter inviting me to join her to eat lunch with my twin grandkids at school.

First thought:  let them have that time with her alone, since she is a working mom and doesn’t get this chance very often.  She assured me it was very O.K.

Second thought:   I need to do some work.  Yes, it is important, but not crucial that it be done in the next hour.

Third thought:  I just changed out of my good clothes and got comfortable in my yoga pants.  This plan would involve getting dressed in something decent again.

Fourth thought:  Heck, yes.  I am going!  Bonus time with daughter and grandchildren?  Especially when it is a surprise? Golden.

More thoughts:  I am 60+ years old.  In the grand scheme of things, will I be remembered by my family after I am gone for how diligent I was on my part-time job or will they remember that their Nana came to play with them one day at lunchtime?  I know the answer for sure.

Maybe you have had the opportunity to spend time with your husband, kids or grandkids lately and decided that cleaning house, doing laundry, finishing work after hours or messaging your friends on Facebook was more important.  May I suggest that you ask yourself, how do you want to be remembered by your family after you are gone?

I think I made the right decision – did you??
